Anti Bullying Buddies

Howley Grange shouts ‘No!’ to bullying

Here at Howley Grange we take pride in the anti-bullying work that we do to ensure all pupils feel safe, happy and knowledgeable on how to recognise bullying. As part of this work every year, year 6 pupils are asked to apply for the role of ‘anti-bullying buddies’ and a group are chosen. They will be expertly trained in peer support including resilience and assertiveness by Jon Lee from the charity ‘Believe to Achieve’ during the autumn term. They will then be out on the bustling playgrounds at Howley Grange, dressed in stunning high visibility jackets. Armed with only a clipboard and a listening ear, this team of fully trained children aim to support their peers experiencing friendship problems.

The ‘Anti-Bullying Buddies’ are only part of the school’s work on tackling and reducing bullying. This year we have also created an anti-bullying steering group who will meet twice a term. This is made up of teaching and non-teaching staff, parents and governors and it is leading the school through an improvement process. This includes policy and procedural reviews, a curriculum review and training from a charity called ‘Believe to Achieve.’ You will see evidence of our work in anti-bullying newsletters, assemblies and the Twitter feed, as well as in our learning environment. We have exciting times ahead as we work together in our school community to ensure the school is a safe and happy place for every single one of our children.

Useful Resources

There are some very helpful resources online that can give you some detailed information about bullying and what can be done to prevent it.

ABQM

The Anti-Bullying Quality Mark (ABQM) is a national accreditation, which recognises the work schools are doing to ensure the children come to a safe and secure environment. Mrs Trueman and Miss Adams are leading the work, along with the steering group, made up of a variety of school community members: Y6 pupil representatives, teachers, teaching assistants, non-teaching staff members, (lunchtime staff, office staff), parents and a parent governor (Sam Jones). We have written a detailed action plan, which covers all aspects of school life. If you would like to know more or need any help with anti-bullying issues, please contact Mrs Trueman or Miss Adams.

The ABQM steering group will meet each half term to monitor and support the development of practice across school. We are working towards achieving the Bronze Award at present and will hopefully have our assessment visit at the end of this year. The first job for our steering group is to review our current anti-bullying policy and write a child friendly version. We will keep you updated!
