Recently, representatives of the Parent Council were asked if they would like to come and be a part of a working Howley Grange for one afternoon, giving them the opportunity to see displays, children at work, children engaging in fabulous finishes and general everyday life at our school. All representatives fed back following this experience and it proved to have been both valuable and enjoyable for them as parents.

Following this the Parent Council would like to open up this opportunity to all. The Parent Council supported by the children on the school council will be hosting two open events for you to attend:
Monday 10th November 9.15-10.30 (tours around school will start at 9.30)
Thursday 20th November from 1.30-2.45 (tours around school will end at 2.30)
We hope to see you then.

Friday 14th November is the official day for the BBC's Children In Need appeal.  We would like to support the appeal by inviting children, if they would like to, to bring a bear to school with them on Friday and to bring in a small donation to the appeal fund.

Money can be handed in to the class teacher on the day.  Children should wear their school uniform to school, except for children in Reception who are having a special day for their fabulous finish.

As children in Reception have lots of activities planned for the day, it might be easier if they didn’t bring in their bears on Friday.  Reception parents have already been invited into school on Friday afternoon for an art and craft workshop and there will be cakes available to purchase during the workshop in aid of Children In Need.

On Monday 31st March 2014, the school will be holding an ‘Eco Green Day’. As part of the day, the children may come to school wearing something green with their school uniform (this could be a green jumper, green socks, green scarf...)

During the day, the children will be raising their awareness of various global issues regarding the need to look after, and protect, Planet Earth.

Our gardening club are also looking to recycle plastic mushroom and fruit containers by using them to grow a range of produce such as ‘living salads’. If you have any of these containers at home, rather than throwing them in your rubbish bin, please would you donate them to school? Collection points will be set up on the morning of ‘Green Day’, but donations at any time would be gratefully received. Please note that your child wearing green is NOT dependent on the donation of a plastic container.

Please could the containers be washed out prior to bringing them to school. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept meat containers.

Thank you for your support.

Our harvest festival assembly takes place on Thursday 10th October and will be presented by children in Mrs Rhodes’ class. Parents of the children involved are invited to come to watch the assembly at 9.00am.

We would like to support the Black Country Food Bank again this year with donations of food from our harvest festival. The Black Country Foodbank helps vulnerable individuals and families in crisis through the provision of three days nutritionally-balanced emergency food supplies while a long-term solution is developed. The services they provide have an enormous impact on the people who use them, giving them important breathing space at a time of great need and stress. In 2012, they were able to provide food for over 12000 people.

All offers of food for the charity are gratefully received. In order to ensure they have an adequate supply and range of food, they have asked if we could provide any of the following:

Food: milk (uht or powder, preferably semi-skimmed),fruit juice (carton long life), pasta / cooking sauces. fruit squash, tinned rice/sponge pudding, tinned tomatoes, cereal (preferably non-sugared), pasta/rice/cous cous (500g / 1kg), tinned vegetables, tinned soup, tea bags (40’s/80’s), coffee (small), potato (instant mash or tinned), tinned meat/fish, baby foods / milk, tinned fruit (in juice preferably) sugar (500g / 1kg), biscuits, crackers, crispbreads, healthy snacks (raisins, apricots etc).

Please ensure that your donations are still in date as food past its use-by or best-before date cannot be given to families in need.

Non –Food: can opener, wash bag, soap / shower gel / bubble bath, shampoo, deodorant
anti-bac hand gel, tooth brush / toothpaste, children’s toothbrush/paste, flannel / sponge, tissues (handy/handbag packs), nappies (all sizes), baby wipes, baby lotion, sanitary towels (not tampons), toilet roll, shaving gel / foam (not razors).

We will be accepting any donations from Monday 7th October until they are collected by the Food Bank on the afternoon of Thursday 10th October and hope that you will be able to offer your support to this worthy cause.

On Monday 3rd December we are inviting the children to come into school in ‘Mufti’ in return for bringing to school an item which you would like to find in a Christmas hamper. The theme for this mufti is Christmas itself, so whether your child wants to come as Santa, one of his helpers, or even dressed as Rudolph, they can join in the festive spirit.

We will make up 12 Christmas hampers packed with goodies from the donated items and raffle them during December giving you a chance to win a hamper for an extra special Christmas treat.

The hampers will be on display in school from Monday 3rd December, to tempt you to buy tickets, a book of which will be sent home with your child priced at £1 per ticket, £5 per book. PTA members will be selling them at school events in the run up to Christmas if you want to increase your chances of winning. The draw will take place in the last week of term so that we can deliver the hampers before the holidays begin.

Thank you in anticipation of your support for this event which we hope will raise funds to benefit all of the children in school.

On behalf of Howley Grange PTA and Howley Grange Scouts thank you for your patience with regards to the above event. As you are aware we have been working closely with the Health and Safety Team at Dudley Council and Solihull Fireworks, to ensure we can deliver a safe event. Unfortunately we have now been informed that the Local Authority and SAG (Safety Action Group) will not support the event due to the standard of Risk Assessment supplied by the firework company.

We are extremely disappointed as our event would have been a huge success and very enjoyable for all attendees. We will be refunding your ticket money in full over the next couple of days, this can be collected from the school office this Thursday and Friday. If this is not suitable please contact Liz Cottle on the number provided above.

We have made enquiries with various other companies to see what other activity we could offer safely and are pleased to announce that we are planning a Winter Fayre for the same date 10.11.12. Our Winter Fayre will have an ice skating rink (with half hour slots available to skate) and will be offering entertainment provided, as well as a variety of stalls selling hot food, a licensed bar in addition to the usual game stalls etc.

The tickets are on sale now and we are expecting demand to be very high. To ensure you don’t miss out, please fill in the slip below and return it to the school office in an envelope marked Winter Fayre including your money for your tickets as soon as possible. We will send the tickets home with your child. As this event is partially in the dark and safety is our main priority it is necessary to issue tickets to the event.Tickets are limited and will be sold on a strictly first come first served basis.

The pricing for the tickets is as follows:-
Adults and children skating                                         £5.00
non skaters                                                                        £2.00
Infants under 3 (non skating)                                     Free

We look forward to seeing you at this new exciting event.

We have the photographer in school on Thursday 27 September.

This year we are working with John Wright Photography, who are midlands based professional photographers. They offer a range of photo packages, enlargements and photo gifts including mugs and mouse mats. Your child will receive a proof print on the day and orders will be delivered direct to your home.

For more information about John Wright’s services please visit www.jwpschools.com.

They will be starting at 8.00am photographing family groups, parents and children together with their younger brothers or sisters who are not yet in school. This also applies to parents who wish to have an older sibling photographed with one of our pupils. School uniform is optional, but children will need to change into their uniform for the remainder of the day.

All children will be photographed individually and families in school will also be photographed during the course of the day.

The PTA would be grateful for any offer of help before the Fete (sorting, ticketing, wrapping) as well as setting up on the day, helping to run stalls, clearing up. Please speak to a PTA member or pass you details to us via the school office if you can help.   There are several things we need for the Fete and once again, we hope you might be able help, especially if you are having a Spring clear-out over the holidays:

If you have any teddies or soft toys that need new homes please send them to school so they can be washed and gift-wrapped ready for the big day. If you are able to wash the teddies for us we’d be very grateful, but please mark the bags clearly if they are washed so that we know they don’t have to be washed again.

The extremely popular crock-smashing stall needs a large supply of old plates, chipped cups, cracked saucers and bowls and even unwanted ornaments to be smashed to pieces. If you are replacing any crockery at home or have any odd items you no longer use, please don’t throw them away – bring them to the school office.

Unwanted gift items, unopened toiletries, and novelty items are needed for our tombola and lucky dip stalls, and the toy stall always welcomes toys and games in good condition to be sold at very reasonable prices. If you are having a clear-out, please let us have anything you think would be suitable.
