Admission Policy

Howley Grange is a two form entry Dudley Education Authority primary school.  Dudley Council has an Inclusive Education Policy and the admissions policy aims to maximise the opportunity to meet parental preference and to meet the individual needs of children at their local school wherever possible.  This has resulted in all schools being given an intake limit.  At Howley Grange this limit stands at 60 places per year group and the places are allocated using the LEA criteria of :-

  • “looked after children – children in public care”
  • A special medical need or statement made under the provision of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Discrimination Act 2002
  • An elder brother or sister registered at the school at the time of admission
  • Proximity to the school

Parents do not have the right to choose which school their child attends.  However, under parents do have the right to express a preference.

Catchment area and feeder schools do not exist in the Dudley borough.  All schools in Dudley will consider applicants on an equal basis.

Please note that any parent using an address at which they are not resident will not be offered a place at the school.  If a "convenience" address is found to have been used after the allocation of a place, then the offer of that place will be withdrawn by the LA.

All school places are allocated in March prior to the academic year when the child is due to start.  All pupils will be admitted to school in September ~ children born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 start in September 2012.

Parents who are refused places at the school of their choice have the right of appeal to the Local Authority.

STARTING SCHOOL

When places have been allocated, we arrange a meeting to pass on as much information as possible so that parents have an insight into how and why we work as we do.  It also gives us the opportunity to reassure parents that we have the interest of their children, our pupils, at heart.

Following the parents’ meeting we invite the children to come for a series of visits.  The older half and younger half of the year group visit on different days as we do appreciate some children in the year group are still very young at this time.

Parents are also invited into school during the second half of the Summer term to have a personal interview with the child's teacher for an in-depth discussion concerning their child and his/her interests and abilities.

The older half of the year group start on the first day back in September with the rest of the school.  The younger half start the following week, building up to full-time in school by the end of that week.

During their first term in school the class teacher, through a series of observations, will begin to build up a profile of your child’s achievements.  This continues throughout the Reception year.  The information gained from the profile helps the teachers to plan learning activities which build upon the knowledge and experience which the children already bring into school with them.  It also enables teachers to set provisional targets to be achieved at the end of Key Stage 1; such targets are constantly under review throughout the child’s time in the Foundation Stage and Early Years and into Key Stage 2.  Parents are informed about their child’s attainment through both discussion with their class teacher and in writing.
